FIRE FIGHTING

PURPOSE

The skills, values, and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of manufacturing and engineering. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. Qualifying learners can select and use the appropriate firefighting equipment to extinguish or control fires in the workplace.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

  • Discussing and explaining procedures for dealing with fires in the workplace.
  • Identifying the type of fire, its context, and selecting the appropriate firefighting procedure.
  • Identifying, selecting, and checking appropriate firefighting and safety equipment.
  • Fighting containable/extinguishable fires.
  • Retreating from the fire site and handing over to appropriate personnel.
  • Reporting/recording the status of fire and equipment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:

  • Communication at NQF Level 01

MODULES

The modules included in the qualification are as the following:

  1. Module 1: Procedures for dealing with fires in the workplace.
  2. Module 2: Types of fire.
  3. Module 3: Appropriate firefighting and safety equipment.
  4. Module 4: Fight containable/extinguishable fires.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Specific careers may include the following:

  • Fire Fighter
  • Fire Marshal

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

  • 30% of your final mark comes from your Formative and Summative Assessments.
  • 70% of your final mark comes from the FISA.
  • You need at least 75% overall to pass.
